Dr. Samuel Frimpong, professor and Robert H. Quenon Endowed Chair of mining engineering is serving on a United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) council of experts dedicated to developing guiding principles for sustainable mining practices in accordance with the Paris Agreement to limit global warming.

UNEP, the University of Western Ontario, the Inter-American Institute on Justice and Sustainability and the Centre for Climate Justice of Glasgow Caledonian University have partnered with a multidisciplinary team to develop guiding principles for responsible and sustainable mining and metallurgy. They hope to inspire institutional and governance frameworks to transform the mining and metals sector. As a council member, Frimpong will help outline the content of guiding principles in consultation with other experts and interested parties.

Frimpong joined the Missouri S&T faculty in 2004 and has served as interim chair of computer science since August 2020.
