Arts, languages and philosophy invites the Spanish-speaking community at S&T to participate in its next monthly El Conversatorio event at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, on Zoom.
Guest speaker Dr. Pamela Cappas-Toro will present “Programas educativos universitarios dentro de espacios carcelarios,” or “Educational University Programs Inside of Carceral Spaces.”
Dr. Pamela Cappas-Toro, an associate professor of world languages and cultures at Stetson University in DeLand, Florida, earned her Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Champagne-Urbana. While completing her doctorate, Cappas-Toro joined the Educational Justice Program (EJP), a college-in-prison program that demonstrates the positive impact of higher education for incarcerated persons. There she taught English and a second language (ESL), Latinx studies, and Afro-Latin American workshops. Her passion for social justice and undergraduate education prompted her in 2015 to co-found and co-direct the Community Education Project, an in-prison liberal arts higher education initiative based in Florida
El conversatorio is a monthly, one-hour informal virtual talk in which guest speakers from different areas of the Spanish-speaking world share their thoughts on current events and issues. After a 20-minute presentation and a question-and-answer session, participants will have an opportunity to interact with each other and practice their Spanish.
Please email Dr. M. Emilia Barbosa, assistant professor of Spanish, for more information.
