The Missouri S&T Steel Bridge Team competed in nationals in June. Entries from university teams across the country were judged on construction speed, lightness, aesthetics, economy and efficiency. Missouri S&T finished 18th overall. The team advanced to the national competition after a regional win in April. Both the regional and national competitions were held virtually this year.
The Student Steel Bridge Competition is designed to supplement a civil engineering education with a comprehensive student-driven project experience from conception and design through fabrication, construction and testing. The result should be a steel structure that meets client specifications and optimizes performance and economy. The competition also increases awareness of realistic engineering issues like spatial constraints, material properties, strength, safety and cost. The team is supported by S&T’s Academy of Civil Engineers.
