Dr. William P. Schonberg was selected as a participant in a June workshop sponsored by the National Science Foundation on the future of the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico. Workshop participants discussed ideas for future scientific, educational and cultural activities at the observatory following the collapse of its 305-meter telescope platform.

Schonberg is a professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering. The group’s goal is to support, broaden and strengthen the radio science community across Puerto Rico and to create or enhance the opportunities for scientific, educational and cultural activities and public outreach at the Arecibo Observatory.

The multidisciplinary group of researchers, engineers and educators discussed ideas and provided input for the short (1-3 years), medium (3-10 years), or long term (over 10 years). The workshop took place over several virtual sessions in June.
