Moats named interim chair of materials science and engineering

Dr. Michael Moats, professor of metallurgical engineering and director of the Thomas J. O’Keefe Institute at Missouri S&T, has been named interim chair of materials science and engineering, effective July 12. Dr. Gregory Hilmas will rejoin the faculty on Aug. 1, after a two-week transition period. Hilmas has led the department for four years.
Moats earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in metallurgical engineering from Missouri S&T and holds a Ph.D. in materials science and engineering from the University of Arizona. He has experience in the private sector as well as academia. He joined S&T’s faculty in 2012.
