In the news: Machine learning security, ethics of new infrastructure, dirty secret of clean energy, ‘hijacking’ word origin

- Dr. Sajal Das, the Daniel C. St. Clair Endowed Chair and professor of computer science, was interviewed for Brian T. Horowitz’s article “Researchers Eye Machine Learning to Secure IoT Data” published April 5 in StateTech. Das and Dr. Tony Luo, associate professor of computer science, are leading research to create new federated learning algorithms.
- Dr. Shane Epting, assistant professor of philosophy, and Dr. John Myers, professor of civil engineering, were featured in an article published May 17 in Informed Infrastructure. The article is titled “The Ethics of Investing in New Infrastructure in the United States.”
- Dr. Michael Moats was interviewed for the Deseret News article titled “Another Dirty Little Secret about Green Energy: It Needs More Mining to Support Biden’s Plan.” The article by Amy Joi O’Donoghue was published May 23. Moats is a professor of metallurgical engineering at S&T.
- Dr. Gerald Cohen’s research into the origin of the word “hijack” was cited in an article titled “Hijacking: From the Theft of Bootleg Liquor to Taking Jets in Flight” by Ben Zimmer. The article was published May 28 by the Wall Street Journal and Morningstar website. An expert in etymology, Cohen is a professor of German and Russian at S&T.
