Dr. Wayne Huebner, professor of ceramic engineering, received a 2020 Governor’s Award for Excellence in Education and was recognized during a surprise celebration on Nov. 19.

“Dr. Huebner is our department’s quintessential teacher,” says Dr. Greg Hilmas, Curators’ Distinguished Professor and chair of materials science and engineering at Missouri S&T. “He has educated a generation of students in ceramic engineering and materials science, and those students often cite his guidance as a reason for their success in academia, industry and national labs.”

Huebner, who earned both a bachelor’s degree and a Ph.D. in ceramic engineering from S&T, joined the faculty in 1991 as associate professor of ceramic engineering. In his time at S&T, Huebner has received five Faculty Excellence Awards, a Faculty Teaching Award and four campus Outstanding Teaching Awards. The American Ceramic Society recognized Huebner with its Outstanding Educator Award in 2016.

The Governor’s Award is presented annually to one faculty member at each Missouri college or university. The awards are based on effective teaching, innovative course design and delivery, effective advising, service to the university community, commitment to high standards of excellence, and success in nurturing student achievement.
