Dr. Diane Michelfelder, professor of philosophy at Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota, will present a talk titled “Technology and the Pandemic Home” at 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, via Zoom. Her talk is the first lecture in a series hosted by arts, languages and philosophy.

Abstract: Percolating through a good deal of philosophical consideration of the meaning of home is the idea that home is the quintessential place to which someone returns. From this angle, home and homecoming seem inseparable. But how might understandings of home shift when, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, home becomes at worst a place of lockdown and quarantine and at best a place from which a getaway is risky? In this talk, Michelfelder will identify some technologies that seem emblematic of pandemic home life. Using them as prisms, she’ll explore how they can help to shed light on ways in which time is experienced in such home life and what home might mean in the future.

All lectures in the series will be held via Zoom and are free and open to the public. For more information, please contact the arts, languages and philosophy department at 341-4185 or email alp@mst.edu.
