Dr. Pericles Stavropoulos, associate professor of chemistry, has been awarded over $450,000 from the National Institutes of Health for a research program titled “Development of First-Row Transition-Metal Catalysts for Selective Nitrene/Carbene-Transfer Chemistry.” The performance period for the program is from Sept. 1, 2020, to August 31, 2023.

The research will investigate new metal reagents to explore catalytic carbon–hydrogen bond activation by inserting nitrogen- and carbon-containing functional groups. The fundamental science associated with the experimental work is projected to identify methodologies that will have potential applications in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, catalytic and other solid-state materials.
