The nano diamond expertise of Dr. Vadym Mochalin, associate professor of chemistry, was featured in an Aug. 25 mass media release from NBD Inc. The company is the creator of the first self-charging nano diamond battery that provides up to thousands of years of charge.

Mochalin’s end quote explains the company’s use of nano diamonds to create the battery. He says the company approached him as an international expert in the field to provide commentary on their technology.

“I was happy to represent Missouri S&T as a leading research university in the field of low-dimensional materials, and particularly in fundamental research and developing applications for nano diamonds,” Mochalin says. “Nano diamond battery is a very interesting technology which potentially can open new avenues in consumer electronics, as well as in many special applications due to very long life time of the battery, eliminating the need for charging, as well as replacing the battery.”

In the release, NBD announced the completion of two successful proof-of-concept tests for the battery at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and the Cavendish Laboratory at Cambridge University. Development of NBD’s commercial prototype battery is underway and will be available later this year.
