Compliance corner: When students work for faculty members in outside interests

Often students become involved in businesses or companies in which faculty members have an outside interest. A conflict of interest may exist in this situation. In these cases, the Conflict of Interest Committee determines if a faculty member has a conflict regarding the student.

The committee will determine one of the following:

  • the conflict is manageable; or
  • the conflict is manageable only through a Student Monitoring Plan and appointment of a conflict of interest student monitor; or
  • the conflict is not manageable and the faculty member may not engage the student.

These measures and the Conflict of Interest Committee are designed to protect the interests of both students and faculty and the interests of Missouri S&T. In situations where a Student Monitoring Plan and appointment of a conflict of interest student monitor are determined, the monitor must be a disinterested party, and a faculty member at or above the rank of the faculty member with the conflict of interest.

If you are a student or faculty member and you feel this policy applies to you, please notify Matt Mertz, senior compliance manager, at mampm2@mst.edu or 341-4124 for assistance in determining the appropriate actions to take.
