Artwork by Jake Welsh: “Graduating in 2020,” digital photo, variable dimension, 2020

Photographs by Jake Welsh, a 2020 Missouri S&T graduate in aerospace engineering, are displayed in the St. Louis Artists’ Guild virtual exhibition, “Art In Isolation.” The national juried art show features U.S. artists working in two-dimensional art, particularly digital, that was created before or during the pandemic. Artists were asked to submit work interpreting the title in their own way.

Welsh created his entries at Missouri S&T in the course “Fundamentals of Photography 3221” taught by Myra Holt, a lecturer in the arts, languages, and philosophy department.

“These images I captured of my roommate represent the creeping feeling of anxiety towards an uncertain future, the helplessness of myself to anything that was happening around me, and the complete frustration caused by being forced into this new lifestyle of isolation,” says Welsh in his artist’s statement.

His images and the work and statements of over 30 artists were selected for the online exhibition.

The virtual gallery walkthrough for “Art In Isolation” may be viewed until June 30.
