Dr. Daniel B. Oerther, professor of environmental health engineering, received the 2020 Honor Award in Environmental Sustainability as part of the annual Excellence in Environmental Engineering and Science competition hosted by the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists. The award was to be presented at an awards luncheon scheduled at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., on April 23.

Oerther’s work on the Caribbean Ocean and Aquaculture Sustainability Facility (COAST) was recognized for supporting food security and the sustainable management of catch fisheries among the 180,000 fishers and their families throughout the Caribbean. COAST is the first use of parametric insurance to simultaneously support livelihoods after a disaster as well as to promote the adoption of climate smart food security best practices ahead of storms.
