COVID-19: Get connected to OpenVPN for working remotely

S&T’s information technology (IT) department recommends using OpenVPN instead of Anyconnect when connecting to S&T’s campus network. Here are instructions for Windows and Mac operating systems.

Windows OS

  1. Go to https://openvpn.mst.edu/.
  2. Save the OVPN client and configuration files locally.
  3. Select the Open VPN Client Link for Windows: OpenVPN Connect.to navigate to the OpenVPN client download page and download OPENVPN CONNECT V3 (BETA).
  4. Run OpenVPN Connect.
  5. Go through the onboarding tour, close the tour, then select Agree/Okay.
  6. Select Filetab. Open the .ovpn configuration file downloaded in step 2.
  7. Provide <username>,or<username>@umsystem.edu (either should work).
  8. Select “openvpn.mst.edu” profile and provide your password.

     Mac/OS

  1. Go to https://openvpn.mst.edu/.
  2. Select the Open VPN Client Link for MacOSX: and save locally.  
  3. Download the OpenVPN 3.x:openvpn-mst-edu.ovpn file.  Note where the files are downloaded for the next step.
  4. Locate the openvpn-connect-3.1.0.890_signed.dmg, run and install this application.
  5. Go through the onboarding tour, close the tour, then select Agree/Okay.
  6. Select File tab. Open downloaded .ovpn file.
  7. Provide <username>, or <username@umsystem.edu (either should work).
  8. Select “openvpn.mst.edu” profile, and provide password.
