SMART scholarships available

The SMART (Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation) Scholarship for Service Program is available to undergraduate and graduate students pursuing a technical degree in one of the following 21 STEM disciplines:

  • Aeronautical and astronautical engineering
  • Biosciences
  • Biomedical engineering
  • Chemical engineering
  • Chemistry
  • Civil engineering
  • Cognitive, neural and behavioral sciences
  • Computer and computational sciences and computer engineering
  • Electrical engineering
  • Environmental sciences
  • Geosciences
  • Industrial and systems engineering (technical tracks only)
  • Information sciences
  • Materials science and engineering
  • Mathematics
  • Mechanical engineering
  • Naval architecture and ocean engineering
  • Nuclear engineering
  • Oceanography
  • Operations research (technical tracks only)
  • Physics

SMART will not fund any management or non-technical degrees. SMART scholars will be employed at a Department of Defense (DoD) facility after graduation. For each academic year of a scholar’s award, he or she is required to commit to one year of civilian employment with the DoD. Get more details.

Please have your students notify Jennifer Pratt at prattjl@mst.edu if they plan to apply for the SMART scholarship. If there is enough interest, the vice chancellor of research’s office may provide support to assist with application writing.
