In the news: Alligator gar, D-Day anniversary, graduation traditions, queer marriage in science

- St. Louis Public Radio’s Eli Chen interviewed Dr. Daivd Duvernell about Missouri’s efforts to raise the state’s population of alligator gar. The story, “Missouri Scientists Fight to Save A Fish with Teeth Like An Alligator” aired June 25. Duvernell is a professor and chair of biological sciences.
- Dr. John C. McManus shared his WWII military history expertise for an article published in a French newspaper, Le Figaro. The article, “Debarquement: ‘Le Jour J marque l’avenement de la superpuissance americaine,’ was published on June 5 in commemoration of the 75th anniversary of D-Day on June 6.
- Dr. Simon J. Bronner is quoted in an article about commencement ceremony traditions published May 21 in The Atlantic. Alia Wong wrote the article, titled “The College That Gives Graduates the Wrong Diploma.” Bronner served as Missouri S&T’s Maxwell C. Weiner Distinguished Visiting Professor of Humanities for the 2018-19 academic year.
- Dr. Kathleen Sheppard, associate professor of history, was a guest on the Lady Science podcast, “Episode 20: Romantic Friendship and Queer Marriage in Science.” Sheppard shares her research on 19th century queer women archaeologists and Egyptologists. Sheppard wrote “Constant Companions and Intimate Friends: The Lives of Maggie Benson and Nettie Gourlay,” published June 6 on the Lady Science blog.
