The Rock Mechanics and Explosives Research Center (RMERC) will host a seminar titled “Mine Cycle of Construction Sand and Gravel Deposits” at 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, in Room 109 of the RMERC. Alan Parks and Corbin Moore of the Memphis Stone & Gravel Co. will present the seminar.
An abstract of the seminar is as follows:
The Upland Complex is high level fluvial terrace deposit of an ancestral Mississippi/Ohio River system. The formation serves as a principle source of local construction aggregate for northwest Mississippi and west Tennessee. This presentation will emphasize each phase of the mining cycle as it pertains to the industry in the Memphis construction market. It will highlight the socioeconomic issues unique to the construction aggregate industry and illustrate numerous examples of how land is returned to other productive use after mining is completed. It will also detail several projects the company has in various stages of development to meet the future market demand.
