Dr. Robert Marley, provost and executive vice chancellor of academic affairs, has announced that Dr. Hsin-liang (Oliver) Chen will become dean of the Curtis Laws Wilson Library on July 1.
Chen is currently the associate dean for assessment and librarian at the Joseph P. Healey Library at the University of Massachusetts Boston. He holds a Ph.D. in library and information science from the University of Pittsburgh. He also holds a master’s degree in educational communication and technology from New York University and a bachelor’s degree in library science from Fu Jen Catholic University in Taiwan.
Prior to joining UMass Boston, Chen taught at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Missouri-Columbia, Indiana University, and Long Island University.
As library dean, Chen will report to Dr. Jeffrey Cawlfield, vice provost for academic support, and will be a member of the provost’s cabinet. Chen will also hold a courtesy appointment as professor of business and information technology at S&T.
“Please join me in welcoming Dr. Chen as dean of the library,” Marley says. “My sincere appreciation goes to Susan Hakim for serving as interim director while this important search was conducted.”
Susan Hakim currently leads the library as interim director, a position she has held since June 2018. She will return to S&T’s office of human resources.
