S&T’s chapter of Women in Nuclear started a “flamingo flocking” fundraiser on Oct. 1 for breast cancer awareness. Proceeds will go to Phelps County Regional Medical Center in Rolla.
The students take a flock of plastic lawn flamingos with nuclear facts written on their backs and “flock” departments around campus. A flocked department can either pay to have the flamingos removed or pay $1 more to flock another department.
The flamingos will migrate around campus throughout October, which is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. According to the American Cancer Society, about one in eight U.S. women will develop breast cancer over the course of her lifetime.
