At 3:16 a.m. today (Tuesday, Aug. 7), the City of Rolla Fire and Rescue responded to a fire alarm in Toomey Hall. Firefighters determined that a small fire (about the size of a desk) had occurred as part of an experiment in a research lab on the second floor. The sprinkler system extinguished the fire, and fire damage was limited to a desktop and equipment within the experiment. While there was no fire damage to Toomey Hall, there was limited water damage due to sprinkler activation.
No one was in the building at the time of the fire, and therefore, no one was injured.
The sprinkler system has been reset and is once again operational in Toomey Hall. The south side and the atrium of Toomey Hall will reopen at 1 p.m. The north side of the building will remain closed until repairs are complete. Repairs are expected to take a few days.
