Dr. Madison McDonald “Mack” Daily Sr. of Rolla, professor emeritus of engineering management, passed away July 22. He was 86. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 3, at the First United Methodist Church in Rolla. Beginning at 10 a.m., his family will receive friends prior to the service.
Daily earned a bachelor’s degree from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1954 and a master’s degree from the Air Force Institute of Technology in 1958. He served 25 years in the Air Force before retiring as a colonel in 1979. Missouri S&T’s engineering management department awarded its first Ph.D. to Dr. Daily in 1984. He joined S&T’s faculty that year and retired in 1999.
During his tenure, Daily helped set the foundation for online courses and distance learning at S&T. He championed using the most advanced technology available at the time, starting with satellites and then moving to computer and video technology. Daily also taught classes through the National Technological University, a consortium of 45 universities.
