Dr. Michael Moats, associate professor of metallurgical engineering, was awarded the James Douglas Gold Medal at the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration’s (SME) annual Meeting in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in February. The award is administered by SME and The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society (TMS).
The award recognizes distinguished achievement in non-ferrous metallurgy, including both the beneficiation of ores and the alloying and use of non-ferrous metals. He received the award for “a great depth of knowledge into the field of electrometallurgy and for sharing his knowledge with clarity and openness” and for “repeatedly being at the forefront of new technologies both from the perspective of basic research and assisting in the implementation.”
