The term “fake news” may seem like a trendy term, but false media reports are not new to this millennium. Dr. Justin Pope, assistant professor of history and political science, writes about the dissemination of false reports through newspapers in New England and the British Isles in the Summer 2017 issue of the Early American Studies journal. His article is titled “Inventing an Indian Slave Conspiracy on Nantucket, 1783.”

Early American Studies is a semiannual publication sponsored by The McNeil Center for Early American Studies at the University of Pennsylvania.
