This award was inspired by S&T 2012 alumnus Ryan Shubatt. Ryan is a petroleum engineer, artist, athlete, and musician. He chose to maximize his time here at S&T by developing multiple facets of himself—he was a true Renaissance student. With the Renaissance Student Award, we want to encourage and recognize more students like Ryan, who aspire to be well-rounded individuals who engage their whole persons in all that they do.
The Renaissance Student Award will be presented to a graduating senior who demonstrates substantive engagement in some creative pursuit in the arts and humanities and meets multiple criteria on this list. The student:
- is successfully self-actuating in more than one discipline;
- shows expertise in several facets of self-development;
- exhibits talents, skills, and engagement in music, theater, sports, visual art, dance, writing; languages, communications, and/or philosophy;
- integrates two or more facets of interest and development in the above areas in a unique and productive manner;
- is able to share, perform, and apply his or her talents and abilities to create a better world for self and others;
- shows initiative;
- shares with others applicable insights gained from his or her studies, practice, travels, and perspective;
- shows evidence of the accomplishments in the above areas (for example, through written, recorded, filmed, or created media or live performance);
- participates in multi-cultural environments.
