Missouri S&T has received reports of a new telephone scam. Callers impersonate an IRS agent and claim the respondent has a penalty on his or her tax return, and then threaten arrest if the money isn’t paid immediately. In some cases, callers can manipulate caller IDs to make the number appear legitimate. These calls are a scam. The IRS doesn’t notify people about penalties by phone. A notice will always be given by mail and you have time to appeal the findings. If you receive a call like this, hang up and report it to the police. Never give any money.
