A new event designed for sophomore students only will be launched on campus in October. The Sophomore Summit will be held 4-6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, starting in the McNutt Hall atrium. The event will feature tips from current students speaking on their experiences in co-ops, internships, study abroad, design teams, involvement, leadership and graduate school. All faculty and staff are invited to attend.

A new sophomore tradition will be introduced to students and gifts will be handed out to all sophomores who attend. In addition to those recognitions, there will be a small resource fair, attendance prizes, Jimmy John’s sandwiches and refreshments for everyone who participates. For more information, contact Student Success Programs by emailing pfrisbee@mst.edu or calling 341-7045.

This event will give sophomores valuable information, resources and support to help them continue their S&T experience toward graduation. Sophomores experience a new set of challenges and research suggests that, during the sophomore year, students may experience a period of confusion and uncertainty (Furr & Gannaway, 1982).

Students will describe how they found their path and how to apply classroom learning to job applications and interviews. There will be information on majors and minors and how to participate in the Blue Key mentor program. Faculty will tell their stories of struggles and successes when they were students and how to be successful, the importance of networking, research opportunities and what departments can offer students.

Dr. Wayne Huebner, professor and chair of materials science and engineering at Missouri S&T, will be the Sophomore Summit’s keynote speaker. Huebner graduated from S&T with a bachelor of science degree in 1987. He is the author of more than 85 papers, monographs and books, and is the senior investigator of the Materials Research Center at S&T. Huebner has been awarded both the Outstanding Teacher Award and Faculty Excellence Recognition Award numerous times.
