On Friday, Aug. 9, the University Police conducted a campus evacuation drill. As part of the drill, Chief Christine Laughlin led her staff through a simulated tanker train wreck that resulted in a release of dangerous chemicals. In the simulation, officers were given 15 minutes to evacuate the campus to a distance of at least a mile.
Department staff had to notify the communications department to initiate evacuation notification, plan evacuation routes and relocate the entire department, including all equipment necessary to conduct business in a remote location.
“Successful drills like this one are an important step in the review of our policies and procedures,” says Laughlin. “They help our officers and administrative staff know what they need to do in an actual emergency.”
