Col. Thomas Akers, who earned a bachelor’s degree in math in 1973 and a master’s degree in math in 1975 from Missouri S&T, will present two significant S&T traditions during the New Student Convocation: the reading of Missouri S&T’s values and the pinning of Joe Miner. Akers is a retired NASA astronaut, a veteran of four space shuttle missions and was S&T’s first alumni astronaut. After retiring from NASA, Akers served as a math instructor at S&T for more than a decade. He retired from S&T in 2010. Akers has received numerous recognitions and awards and the new student programs department is honored that he will present at the 2013 New Student Convocation, at 9 a.m. Monday, Aug. 12, in the Gale Bullman Multi-Purpose Building. Join them and welcome our new students. For more information, contact new student programs at 341-7045.
