This year’s Opening Week freshmen design project, Project X, will be sponsored by Union Pacific. The company will have representatives on the S&T campus during Opening Week to judge projects and help new students with various programs. Opening Week begins on Saturday, Aug. 11, and runs through Friday, Aug. 17.

During the week, new students will be divided into 64 mentor groups and will have the opportunity to create a Project X vehicle that will be judged on several objectives — design, creativity, presentation and journal. On Friday, Aug. 17, the week will end with a team competition racing throughout campus. The races will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Puck, and end around 2:30 p.m. at the finish line at the Havener Center. An awards ceremony recognizing the top teams will be held at 9 p.m. that evening in the Havener Center. The campus community is encouraged to attend this fun event. If you don’t have time to watch the races, vehicles will be on display all day in the Havener Center.
