The 2012 RecycleMania Tournament begins on Sunday, Feb. 5, and ends Saturday, March 31. The EcoMiners will promote recycling and responsible choice mini-events throughout the competition. S&T has participated in the 2009, 2010 and 2011 competitions.

RecycleMania is a friendly competition and benchmarking tool for college and university recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities to their campus communities. Over a 10-week period, schools report recycling and trash data and are ranked amongst all participating institutions in various categories:

  • Grand Champion: the school that demonstrates the greatest achievement in both source reduction and recycling
  • Per Capita Classic: ranked by collecting the largest amount of acceptable recyclables per person
  • Waste Minimization: ranked by the least amount of municipal solid waste (including both recyclables and landfill trash) produced per person
  • Gorilla Prize: competition to see which school collects the highest gross tonnage of recyclables, regardless of campus population
