Missouri S&T’s men’s soccer team, ranked 25th in the latest NSCAA Division II national rankings, defeated Bellarmine 3-0 Sunday in the opening round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament at the S&T Soccer Field. Spencer Brinkmeyer, one of five Miners named to the All-GLVC team last week, scored twice in the first half and Jervis Atagana added a goal in the second half. The Miners’ defense recorded the team’s 11th shutout of the season — GLVC “Defensive Player of the Year” Pat McNamee made five saves in goal — to send S&T to the semifinals of the conference tournament for the first time in school history.
The Miners will face No. 2 seed Northern Kentucky Friday at 6:30 p.m. (Central time) in Highland Heights, Ky.; a win would send them to the championship game Sunday at NKU.
S&T’s women’s soccer team fell 3-1 in its opening round game Sunday at Quincy. Leah Williams scored the goal for the Lady Miners, who closed the year with an 8-7 record for their first winning mark in 10 seasons.
