Svyatoslav Puyat, a junior in history from House Springs, Mo., won Honorable Mention in a national Russian essay contest sponsored by the American Council of Teachers of Russian. The title of his essay is based on a Russian saying, “Do not have hundred roubles, have hundred friends.”

Puyat placed in the Heritage Learners, Level 3, which consists of students who speak Russian with their families and attended school in Russia for five or more years. Puyat is originally from Saratov, Russia.
In this year’s contest, 1,023 essays were submitted from 64 colleges and universities. More than 100 of those students won awards. Dr. Irina Ivliyeva, assistant professor of Russian at Missouri S&T, entered 15 students in the contest.
Missouri S&T will be featured online at www.aatseel.org and in the ACTR Newsletter at www.americancouncils.org/index.php.
