University of Missouri System enhances SSN security

The University of Missouri System is enhancing its security policies by storing Social Security Numbers (SSNs) mandatory for business purchases in a centralized database and purging those that are unnecessary.

A division of IT will work with offices that still need to collect SSNs to store them in the centralized database. This database generates an Alternate Identification (AltID) number for application use. AltID looks and acts like a SSN, but without the risk of identity theft.

Contact S&T’s campus information security office at security@mst.edu to register applications that use SSNs and to discuss strategies to secure your data.

Additional information about the SSN project is available online at www.umsystem.edu/ums/departments/is/. The password-protected link can only be accessed by members of the university community.
