Say "hello" at new Missouri S&T website

With only two months to go before UMR officially becomes Missouri S&T, the university has launched a new website to introduce the new name to the online world. The “hello” website, at hello.mst.edu , is designed for students, alumni, faculty and staff to share user-generated video as a way to introduces themselves and the new name. visit http://hello.mst.edu to vote on the current crop of videos, and submit your own.

America Recycles Day is Nov. 15

Learn how to market high-tech products and services

A three-day executive course on the marekting of products and services associated with technology and life science will be held Nov. 28-30 in Columbia. The host for the event is the University Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Mizzou. The course, which is built around the sharing of real-life examples, addresses individual marketing challenges and case studies. The course is led by Chris Halliwell, a business consultant who has mentored several new technology companies and has given presentations at leading universities. The cost is $500, which includes lodging, course materials and all but one meal. The second participant from a company may register for a reduced cost of $300. Philosophy department welcomes Lamboy

Dr. Regine Lamboy will be visiting campus to meet students interested in philosophy on Tuesday, Oct. 30. Lamboy, who is joining the UMR philosophy department this spring, will give a talk ("Is Plato's Republic a Reductio?") at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in Room 101 of the Humanities and Social Sciences Building.

Hall of famers inducted, Miners win

The latest members of the MSM-UMR Athletic Hall of Fame were inducted Saturday, a day on which the Miners rolled to a 48-10 win over Lincoln at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.

How safe is your home for small children?

A group of students enrolled in an engineering management class is conducting research on how safe a typical home is for children age 5 and younger. The goal is to improve the safety of children by identifying risks and suggesting precautions that might prevent accidents. To participate in the study, contact Christian Berens at clbd39@umr.edu or 573-450-0140 or email Dr. Susan Murray at murray@umr.edu.

The students will go through a series of safety checks in the kitchen, bathroom, child's bedroom, garage and outdoor areas. At the end of the evaluation, participants will receive their results and tips on how to improve home safety. Evaluations should take less than an hour and won't require any special effort (other than to show students your home).

Volunteers needed

Help young women expand their horizons when it comes to math, science, engineering and technology. Faculty and staff members are needed to guide seventh and eighth grade girls around campus from 8 a.m. to noon on Nov. 9. For more information, email grentzl@umr.edu.

Costume contest and chili cook off scheduled

Engineering management and systems engineering will have their annual halloween costume contest and chili cook off on Oct. 31 in the EMSE Piano Lobby. Prizes for the best costume and best chili will be awarded. Chili judging is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Entries will be accepted until 11:15 a.m. (Please make one pot of chili for the contest.) Costume judging will be at noon. (Come by the department's main office between 9 a.m. and noon to have your photo taken if you are unable to be there at noon.) Chili will be available for $1 a bowl. Proceeds benefit GRACE.

Watch volleyball, scare the competition

The Lady Miners will play their final home match of the season at 7 p.m. Tuesday against UMSL and two fans will have a chance to win a one-night stay at the Holiday Inn Express in Rolla. It will be "Scare the Competition Night," so fans are encouraged to wear their best Halloween costume to the game. One costumed male and one costumed female winner will be declared winners. Students to conduct sports camp for children

UMR's senior capstone group would like to invite your children (grades 3-6) to an afternoon of learning the fundamentals of sports, including basketball, soccer, football and baseball. We will be hosting the camp from 1-5 p.m. on Nov. 11 at UMR's Multi-Purpose Building. The cost for the camp will be $25 and will include a "Play Like the Pros" water bottle. Parking lot repairs

Due to repairs, Parking Lot No. 7 (Area B) directly behind the Campus Support Facility will be closed Saturday, Oct. 27, through the end of the day on Monday, Oct. 29. Graduate student to give biological sciences presentation

A biological sciences seminar will be held at noon on Monday, Oct. 29, in Room 126 of Schrenk Hall. Graduate student Erin Pringle will discuss the identification and characterization of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase gene family members in Glycine max.

Topic of workshop is understanding poverty in learning structures

Dr. Rita Pierson will present a two-day workshop, "A Framework for Understanding Poverty with Learning Structures," from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Nov. 13-14 in the St. Pat's Ballroom of the Havener Center.

Pierson will provide an in-depth study of information and issues that will increase the participants' knowledge and understanding of the poverty culture. Topics include: how economic class affects behaviors and mindsets, why students from generational poverty often fear being educated, the "hidden rules" within economic classes, discipline interventions that improve behavior, and the eight resources that make a difference in success. This seminar is designed for audiences of both elementary- and secondary-level educators but it also might be of interest to those working in social services or faith-based organizations.

Finite model theory to be discussed

The mathematics and statistics student research seminar continues on Mondays and Wednesdays from noon to 12:50 p.m. with discussions on finite model theory and its applications. Seminar sessions take place in Room G5 of the Rolla Building. Travis Service, a graduate student in computer science, is this week's speaker. The campus community is invited. Miners get a Homecoming win

The Miners got into the win column for Homecoming Saturday, as freshman quarterback Steve Watson threw five touchdown passes -- three to Ashton Gronewold -- and Jerome Miller ran for a career-high 137 yards to lead UMR to a 44-28 win over Central State at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.

Watch volleyball, get free stuff

The UMR Lady Miner Volleyball Team will give away 75 free Missouri S&T shirts (donated by Key Sport) during the home match with SIUE Friday, Oct. 19. The action starts at 7 p.m. As part of fan appreciation night, the team will also give away Lady Miner autographed cards to the first 500 fans and one lucky fan will win $50 worth of Key Sport Bucks. Spring Schedule of Classes released

The Spring 2008 Schedule of Classes information is now available to the public online or through Joe’SS. Advising week begins Oct. 22 with student registration appointment times starting on Oct. 29. Student degree audits for advisors are available in the Registrar’s Office for departments to pick up.

Visiting professor to give talk Friday

Professor Mark Dunster from San Diego State University is visiting UMR's department of mathematics and statistics this week. Dunster will give a talk on "resonance and almost nonuniqueness in the scattered field of a dielectric circular cylinder" at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, in Room G5 of the Rolla Building). This interdisciplinary topic will be of interest to faculty and graduate students from several UMR departments.

Write well and win

Arts Rolla is holding its 7th Writing Competition. The entry form can be downloaded from the Arts Rolla website. To receive the form by mail, call the Arts Rolla office at 364-5539 or contact Gerald Cohen (gcohen@umr.edu). The submission deadline for the competition is Dec. 1. The competition is supported by UMR's department of English and technical communication.

The competition accepts written work in the creative writing categories of fiction, non-fiction and poetry. Two judges will choose the prize winners in each category. At the judges’ discretion, monetary awards worth $100, $50, and $25 will be given.

The winners will be announced and have an opportunity to read from their work at a reception to be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 11, 2008, at the Centre (Rolla’s Health and Recreation Complex), 1200 N. Holloway St. The public is invited to this event.

Learn new ways to use Blackboard

Angie Hammons, educational technology specialist for UMR Information Technology and for the campus, will be hosting a series of training seminars for faculty interested in learning more about effective teaching strategies with Blackboard. The first seminar will be from 4–5 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 29, in Room 103 of the UMR Library. This session will demonstrate the use of the Assignment Tool in Blackboard instead of the Digital Drop Box for managing student assignments.

Tech help available to teachers

Starting on Friday, Oct. 26, Angie Hammons of UMR IT will be hosting Teach Tech Fridays, an opportunity for instructors to get help with educational technology on campus. This includes Blackboard, clickers, Smartboards, and other technology used on campus to enhance the learning experience for students.

Internal review of EMS is underway

UMR is conducting an internal review of its environmental management system now through the end of October. The scope of the audit and a list of participating departments are posted online .

The internal audit is conducted to help prepare the campus for the external ISO 14001-certification audit, scheduled for Oct. 30-Nov. 1, 2007. Ron Kurtzman with National Quality Assurance USA Inc. (NQA) will conduct the external audit at UMR during that time frame.

Film presentation moved to new location

"MAXED OUT," the UMR Film Festival presentation for Tuesday, Oct. 23, will be screened in Leach Theatre at 7 p.m., NOT in the Physics Auditorium.

Soccer Miners win in overtime

For the second time in three days, the Miner soccer team ended up in an overtime contest -- and came away a winner. Daniel Stokes headed in Brandon Moore's corner kick with just under five minutes to play in the second overtime, giving UMR a 2-1 win over Indianapolis Sunday at the UMR Soccer Field. Reminder: Dispose of batteries properly

Batteries consumed at UMR are considered a universal waste. Do not throw small batteries (AA, AAA, C, D Lithium, Ni-Cdm) or any car batteries in the trash. The proper disposal of used batteries is very important to UMR. There is a limited supply of containers to collect/store the used batteries for your department or building. Plan ahead for flu season

The Phelps County Health Department will be conducting a flu immunization clinic from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8, in the Havener Center. Please check the information board located in the Havener Center lobby for room location. The clinic is open to all students, faculty, staff, spouses and family members. The cost is $20 per immunization.

UMR Student Health Services does not offer flu shots to UMR students, faculty or staff.

SHS staff recommends that anyone interested in getting a flu shot visit the Phelps County Health Department, 202 N. Main St. in Rolla. The health department is offering flu shots on a walk-in basis for $20.

The Student Union Board's Social Awareness Committee will host a special presentation by Dr. John Corvino at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, in the Carver-Turner Room of the Havener Center. Corvino will present, "Homosexuality: Morals and Ethics (or lack thereof?"

Foreign language comments sought

The language section of the arts, languages, and philosophy department is currently updating its web pages. On the new pages, we will post information about the importance of studying foreign languages and we would like to include some quotations from faculty outside our department. We are therefore requesting comments from faculty regarding how foreign languages are used in your fields. We also welcome comments about your personal experiences learning or working with a foreign language. The 23rd Annual UMR Transfer Conference is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 11. More than 20 representatives from UMR transfer partner colleges and universities will be on the UMR campus to discuss issues and programs relevant to UMR transfer students, who currently make up nearly 30 percent of all new UMR students each year.

Clear writing, successful proposals workshop set for Oct. 15

Kate Drowne, director of the UMR Writing Center, will present "Clear Writing, Successful Proposals" from 3-4:40 p.m. Oct. 15 in the Meramec/Gasconade Room of the Havener Center.

The workshop is the first in a series sponsored by the graduate studies office. The workshops are open to all UMR graduate students, faculty and staff. EMSE to host Chili for Charity event

All faculty, staff, and students are invited to the EMSE 'Chili for Charity' event beginning at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31, in the Piano Lobby (2nd floor) of the Engineering Management Building.

EMSE faculty, staff, and students will be competing for the coveted "BEST CHILI" award.

Recycle toner cartridges

Recycling does work. To date, UMR has collected and recycled 837 toner catridges. Please make sure that you continue to box up old cartridges and send them with your outgoing campus mail. Volunteers needed for Expanding Your Horizon's conference

Volunteers will guide a group of 7th and 8th graders between their four events from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Nov. 9. Meet Dr. Paul Stricker (Life Sciences ’82)

Dr. Paul Stricker (Life Sciences ’82), author and youth sports medicine specialist, will speak during a brown bag luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, in the Alumni Association office in Castleman Hall. Drinks will be provided.

Stricker, author of “Sports Success RX!” is one of a small number of physicians in the United States to be board-certified in pediatrics and sports medicine. He is the first pediatrician to be selected by the U.S. Olympic Committee for the 2000 Summer Olympics medical staff and is the current President of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine.

His book “Sports Success RX!” outlines the many unrealistic expectations and pressures associated with our children’s athletic aspirations which stem from a lack of knowledge about the sequential maturation of these skills. Stricker, a 1982 life sciences graduate of UMR, completed pediatrics at Arkansas Children’s Hospital and sports medicine at UCLA. He received a professional degree from UMR in 2006. Stricker graduated from John F. Hodge High School in St. James.

The UMR volleyball team will kick off a Save Lids to Save Lives breast cancer awareness campaign at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, when the team takes on St. Joseph's College. Fans are asked to wear pink in support of the program.

Fans are also asked to collect pink Yoplait yogurt lids and bring them to any home volleyball game during the month of October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. At the end of the month, the lids will be returned to Yoplait. The company has pledged tol donate 10 cents for each lid received to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer research.

The volleyball team will also be in action at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, which is Parent's Night, and at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, which is Boy and Girl Scout day. All Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts will get into the game free.

UMR police officer arrested

UMR police officer Leonard Cook Jr. was arrested Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2007, on charges of second-degree statutory sodomy and possession of child pornography on his personal computer. Cook’s arrest follows an investigation by the Missouri Highway Patrol. He has been suspended without pay pending an investigation.

According to the Highway Patrol, future information concerning this investigation will be disseminated by the Phelps County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

Water outage Oct. 6

Water service to McNutt Hall, the Engineering Management Building and the Havener Center will be shut off at 6:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, for the main service improvement and connecting of Toomey Hall. It will remain shut off until the job is completed.

Miners come up short

Ashton Gronewold put up the best all-purpose yardage numbers in school history. Steve Watson had the third-highest passing yardage total ever for a Miner quarterback in his debut. But the numbers weren't enough to push the Miners to a victory Saturday night as Arkansas-Monticello rolled to a 45-28 win at Allgood-Bailey Stadium. Catch up on all of the UMR sports news.

UMR in the news: Land speed record update

Jerrod Bouchard and crew are in Nevada right now, preparing for a chance to break the collegiate human-powered land speed record. KOLR-10 (CBS) in Springfield was in Rolla last week to interview the team members. The story was supposed to air last Friday, but it has been pushed back to tonight (Monday night) and will run during the 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. newscasts.
