Materials from two recent public forums held on the Missouri S&T campus have now been posted online.

Nominate deserving individuals for the 2016 Miner Alumni Association awards program. Each year at Homecoming, the Miner Alumni Association honors outstanding graduates and friends of Missouri S&T in five award categories:

Dr. Zelda Zabinsky, professor of industrial and systems engineering at the University of Washington-Seattle, will be the Bernard Sarchet Graduate Seminar Series Speaker noon-12:50 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, in Room 260 Toomey Hall. Zabinsky’s lecture, titled “On Beyond LP: Optimization of Complex Systems,” will summarize theoretical results regarding performance of random search algorithms and discuss a new meta-control methodology that adaptively guides an interacting-particle algorithm with a filtering technique.

Area M Lot 36, will be closed starting at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8, for the India Association’s Diwali Night, which will include a fireworks display at approximately 6:15 p.m. that night.

The Community Blood Center of the Ozarks, in collaboration with Student Council, is hosting the last day of its blood drive 11 a.m.-5 p.m. today (Thursday, Nov. 5) in St. Pat’s Ballroom A and B of the Havener Center. All blood types are needed, so donate if you can.

The next Faculty First Friday will be held on Friday, Nov. 6. These informal lunches provide an opportunity to network and share ideas with your faculty colleagues and university administration. The brown-bag lunch will be held noon-1 p.m. in the Kinyon-Koeppel Grand Hall of Hasselmann Alumni House, located at 1100 N. Pine St. Participants should bring their own lunch, and the chancellor’s office will provide drinks (iced tea, water, coffee) and desserts.

Dr. Hon Wai Leong, an associate professor at the National University of Singapore and currently on sabbatical leave at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, will present “Mining Communities in Large Networks from Big Data” 10-11:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 6, in Room 249 Toomey Hall. During the seminar, Leong will discuss how large graphs arise from big data, survey some of many algorithms for detecting communities in large graphs and discuss the reason for the proliferation of methods for detecting communities. The seminar is sponsored by the business and information technology department.

Missouri S&T’s intramural department will host the Missouri Intramural Recreational Sports Association’s (MOIRSA) Miner Bowl this Friday, Nov. 6, and Saturday, Nov. 7, at the S&T Intramural Fields and Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
