Dr. Larry Gragg, Curators’ Teaching Professor of history and political science, was interviewed for the BBC World Service show Witness for its episode “Noel Coward Plays Vegas” on Tuesday, Sept. 8. Coward, the famed English playwright, singer and actor, performed at the Desert Inn in Las Vegas in 1955. Gragg provided background on organized crime in Las Vegas, Coward’s preparation for his performances and the importance of entertainment in attracting gamblers to casinos.

Zoughi gives IEEE Distinguished Lecture

Dr. Reza Zoughi, the Schlumberger Distinguished Professor of electrical and computer engineering, delivered the IEEE Distinguished Lecture on Friday, Oct. 2, at Iowa State University’s College of Engineering. Zoughi’s talk, titled “Evolution of Microwave and Millimeter Wave Imaging for NDE Applications,” provided an overview of new, 3-D imaging techniques for non-destructive evaluation of materials.

Benjamin Seabough, assistant professor of aerospace studies-Air Force ROTC and operations flight commander, was promoted to the rank of major on Thursday, Oct. 1. This promotion is a culmination of 10 years of active -duty service to his country and the Air Force.

Gao and Yang featured in ‘Nature: Scientific Reports’

Dr. Jie Gao and Dr. Xiaodong Yang, both assistant professors of mechanical and aerospace engineering, had research featured in Nature: Scientific Reports this past September. The article is titled “Ultrasensitive detection and characterization of molecules with infrared plasmonic metamaterials.” Fei Cheng, a visiting scholar, also co-authored the article.

The website describes itself as “the leading worldwide community of filmmakers, video producers and independent creatives.”

Taylor inducted into the Missouri Mining Hall of Fame

Jimmie Taylor, supervisor at the Experimental Mine and part of the mining and nuclear engineering department for 23 years, was inducted into the Missouri Mining Hall of Fame during the Missouri Mine Rescue Association’s award banquet on Thursday, Oct. 1. He has been involved with mine rescue throughout his employment. Missouri S&T was the first university to establish a mine rescue team.

Sheppard speaks about women in archaeology

Dr. Kathleen Sheppard, assistant professor of history and political science, was invited to speak as part of the Centenary Celebrations for the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology at University College in London on Wednesday, Sept. 9. Sheppard’s talk, titled “Professional Networks of Women: Margaret Murray’s Role in Archaeology,” highlighted Murray’s work in Malta and her training of her female students and colleagues.
