Smith helps organize energy symposium

Dr. Joseph Smith, the Wayne and Gayle Laufer Chair of Energy and a professor of chemical and biochemical engineering, helped to organize the eighth Sino-US Joint Conference of Chemical Engineering at the East China University of Science and Technology in Shanghai, China. At the symposium, held Oct. 12-16, Smith gave a keynote address that highlighted the research Missouri S&T is conducting on microgrids and sustainable energy.

Outstanding teachers to be honored Nov. 30

Forty-one Missouri S&T faculty members will receive the Outstanding Teaching Award for 2014-15 at a ceremony scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 30, in St. Pat’s Ballroom A of the Havener Center. Dr. Jihong Yan, professor of advanced manufacturing at Harbin Institute of Technology in China, will present a seminar titled “Sustainability Assessment and Energy Efficiency Oriented Simulation,” at 3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 30, in Room 213 Butler-Carlton Civil Engineering Hall. Yan will present a modular design methodology for achieving sustainable design as well as fulfilling functional requirements with a novelty 6R concept (reuse, recycle, reduce, recover, redesign and remanufacture). The event is part of the Bernard Sarchet Graduate Seminar Series sponsored by engineering management and systems engineering.

Learn about Army R&D at a Dec. 3 luncheon

Mark Metzger, senior technology advisor at the U.S. Army’s Picatinny Arsenal research and development facility, will present a seminar at noon Thursday, Dec. 3, in the Meramec Room of the Havener Center. Metzger’s lecture will cover the need to produce the next generation of energetic materials and the current lack of advanced processes for material fabrication. Lunch will be served at the event.
