Smoke testing at University Commons today

There will be smoke testing from 9 a.m. to noon today (Thursday, Aug. 4) at University Commons, the new residential complex at University Drive near I-44. Construction crews and university officials will conduct the tests. The tests will result in several instances of significant amounts of smoke billowing from the roof of University Commons.

Passing of Dr. Roman Dwilewicz

Dr. Roman J. Dwilewicz, professor of mathematics and statistics at S&T, died on Friday, July 29. Visitation will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, at Null and Son Funeral Home, located at 1010 Kingshighway in Rolla. A funeral service will follow the visitation, conducted by Rev. David Veit, pastor of Saint Patrick’s Catholic Parish.

Teaching partners program can help improve classroom effectiveness

The Teaching Partners program brings together instructors who want to improve their effectiveness in the classroom with experienced colleagues who offer confidential assistance and expertise. Schedule a time for fall observation today by going to the Teaching Partners webpage and completing a brief online form. The program consists of at least one peer observation of teaching during the semester and can be used to improve interaction with students, communication style, use of technology or to troubleshoot other classroom issues. Windows 10 standard on select new Dell laptops

Select models of Dell laptops purchased through the information technology (IT) asset management process will now come with Windows 10 as a standard build. Models include: Dell Latitude E5470, Latitude E5570, Latitude E7270 Ultra Book, Latitude E7470 Ultra Book, and Latitude 2 in 1 7275 tablet. IT is working on a Windows 10 build for desktop models and will notify campus when it is available.

Last 2016 PRO session is Aug. 13

The final Preview, Registration and Orientation (PRO) session for 2016 will be held at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, in the Havener Center. Incoming students will learn about student life, take the math placement exams, meet with their S&T advisor and register for fall classes. New student transfer transition Aug. 18

Transfer Transition, an orientation day for new transfer students, will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, in Room 120 Butler-Carlton Civil Engineering Hall. New transfer students will participate in a project and competition, meet faculty and staff from their departments and learn about S&T campus life. ASEM award named after William Daughton

The American Society for Engineering Management recently named one of its annual awards after Dr. William Daughton, professor emeritus of engineering management and systems engineering. Daughton recently retired as executive director of the society, and to recognize his service and contributions to the society, ASEM renamed one of its service awards to the William Daughton World Headquarters Service Award. This award recognizes significant contributions to the streamlining, enhancement or improvement of the day-to-day operations of ASEM world headquarters. Daughton is also an ASEM Fellow.
