The physics department will host a retirement reception honoring Dr. Ralph Alexander Jr., professor of physics, from 2-4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4, in the Fuller Room (Room 208) of the Physics Building. Dr. Alexander has inspired faculty, staff and many students in his 39 years of service to the university. Join the physics department as they wish him well in his retirement.

A farewell reception for Jennifer Shaner, program/project support specialist for undergraduate studies, will be held from 2-3:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, in Room 105 Norwood Hall. All students, faculty and staff are invited to attend.

The "Inspired by Writing" Art Show reception will be held from 3-6 p.m. today Thursday, Oct. 22, in the Writing Center in Room 113 Campus Support Facility. The artwork will be displayed until Thanksgiving week, the last week of November. For additional information, contact Brandi Washburn at 341-4436 or brandiw@mst.edu.

Everyone is invited to attend the Fitness Center dedication at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, near the southwest entrance of the Gale Bullman Multi-Purpose Building. The new Fitness Center is a part of the Student Recreation Center renovation.

Immediately following the dedication, guests are invited to tour the new facilities and join the Miner Alumni Association for its Kick-Off Tailgate Party outside Allgood-Bailey Stadium. The cost for lunch at the Tailgate Party is $10. Register for the Tailgate lunch at alumni.mst.edu, or by calling the alumni office at 341-7677.

Get artsy in the Writing Center

The Missouri S&T Writing Center invites you to submit artwork that has been inspired by writing for the "Inspired by Writing" Art Show. The submission deadline is Monday, Oct. 19. Art can be submitted from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Thursday and from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Friday to the Writing Center in Room 113 Campus Support Facility. There is no submission fee.

The opening reception for the show will be held from 3-6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, in the Writing Center. The artwork will be displayed until Thanksgiving week, the last week of November. For additional information, contact Brandi Washburn at 341-4436 or brandiw@mst.edu, or stop by during normal business hours.

The garden created in honor of the late Dr. Gary Thomas, chancellor of Missouri S&T from September 2000 through August 2005, will be formally dedicated at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, on the northwest end of Toomey Hall. The event is open to the public and is part of Missouri S&T's 2009 Homecoming Weekend activities. If you plan to attend the event, please RSVP to Kim Johnson at 341-6359 or kaj@mst.edu by Friday, Oct. 16. Refreshments will be provided.

The campus is invited to a retirement reception for Linda Lloyd, senior bindery operator for printing services. The reception will be held from 2-4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, in Room G6 Campus Support Facility. Stop by to congratulate Lloyd on her retirement and to celebrate her 31 years with the university.

Gillman's reception is Thursday

A farewell reception for Amy Gillman, assistant to the vice provost for undergraduate studies, will be held from 2-4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, in Room 105 Norwood Hall. All students, faculty and staff are invited to attend.

Gillman was environmental management system coordinator in the office of environmental health and safety from 1998-2004. She has worked in the office of undergraduate studies since 2004. Her last day is Friday, Sept. 25.
