MSE department welcomes guest speaker

Dr. Ryan Giedd will be the guest speaker at the MSE Seminar at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 1, in McNutt 204. Giedd's presentation is titled, "New Carbon-Based Electronic Device Applications." Giedd is the executive director of Jordan Valley Innovation Center as well as a professor in the department of physics, astronomy and materials science at Missouri State University.

Larry Hench, inventor of Bioglass, to speak on campus

Professor Larry Hench, inventor of Bioglass, will be giving a public lecture on "21st century challenges for materials science" at noon on Thursday, April 24, in Room 204 of McNutt. Bioglass is the first human-made material that bonds to living tissue, and it is used globally for a wide variety of therapeutic applications.

In addition, Hench is the author of the "Boing, Boing the Cat" series of children's books. These books are intended to introduce engineering and science topics to kids. He will be signing copies of his books at 11:30 a.m. in McNutt.

Guest lecturer to discuss precision forming

Dr. Taylan Altan, professor and director of the Center for Precision Forming at Ohio State University, is giving a lecture at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, April 10, in Room 120 of the Butler-Carlton Building. Everyone is invited. This lecture on precision forming is sponsored by mechanical and aerospace engineering, the Intelligent Systems Center and the Academy of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineers. Day to deliver lecture on treating cancer with radioactive glass beads

Dr. Delbert Day, Curators' Professor emeritus of materials science and engineering, will present a biological sciences seminar on "Destroying Malignant Tumors Using Radioactive Glass Microspheres," at noon on Monday, March 10, in Room 126 of Schrenk Hall at Missouri S&T. Day will describe how glass microspheres developed at Missouri S&T are being used by physicians to successfully treat patients with liver cancer in the United States, Europe and Asia.

Faculty candidate to present seminar Friday

Dr. Jian Zhao will present a seminar on "Nonlinear Shear Lag in Thin-Walled Structures under Extreme Loading" at 2:15 p.m. Friday, March 7, in Room 216 of the Civil Engineering Building. More faculty candidates to give seminars

The engineering management and systems engineering department will be hosting seminars by faculty candidates starting March 3. Dr. Rahul Rai, a visiting faculty member in the mechanical engineering department at Fresno State University, will speak at 1:30 p.m. Monday, March 3, in Room G-14 of the library. Rai's research is on computational methods that aid engineering designers early in the process. Rai earned his master's degree from Missouri S&T and his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin.

Bridge piers to be topic of seminar

You are invited to a civil, architectural and environmental engineering department seminar on "Multi-Hazard Resistant Highway Bridge Piers" by Shuichi Fujikura, a Ph.D. candidate from the University of Buffalo,at 2:15 p.m. Monday, March 3, in Room 315 of the Civil Engineering Building. Wadsworth to deliver A. Frank Golick lectures

Dr. Jeffrey Wadsworth, executive vice president for the Battelle Memorial Institute's Global Laboratory Operations, is the 19th A. Frank Golick Lecturer at Missouri S&T. Wadsworth will deliver two lectures on campus. He will present "Three Puzzles in Materials Science" at noon Wednesday, March 5, and "The History of Genuine Damascus Steels and Attempts to Rediscover How They were Made," at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, March 6. Both lectures will be held in Room 204 of McNutt Hall. The lectures are free and open to the public.

The Missouri S&T department of mathematics and statistics is hosting two upcoming public lectures:

Dr. Mark Abramson of the Air Force Institute of Technology will give a talk ("Mesh Adaptive Direct Search Algorithms for Constrained Mixed Variable Optimization") at 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, in Room G-5 of the Rolla Building.

Dr. Radu Dascaliuc of Indiana University will present "Navier-Stokes Equations and Turbulence Theory" at 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18, in Room G-5 of the Rolla Building.

Learn time management and self-motivation

Your time is important . . . and limited. To raise your level of success, you must become more knowledgeable and efficient in your time management. Time management, in essence, is self management. This interactive session encourages personal change and provides useful strategies to achieve goals. Civil rights author to speak

Jimmie Briggs, a St. Louis native and author of “Innocents Lost: When Child Soldiers Go To War,” will give several public talks at Missouri University of Science and Technology in February. Briggs will discuss the need for ethical leadership in the global community as part of the Black Man’s Think Tank Leadership series starting at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 11, in the Havener Center on the Missouri S&T campus. The Energy Research and Development Center is pleased to invite researchers and students to a seminar with Dr. Michael Quah from Concurrent Technology Corporation at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, in St Pat’s Ballroom B of the Havener Center. Quah will engage the Missouri S&T community on "Alternative Energy and Defense," a topic that springs from the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007.

University of Leeds professor to speak Jan. 25 in Leach Theatre

The Baptist Student Union will present a free lecture by Dr. Andy McIntosh at 7 p.m. Jan. 25 in Leach Theatre. McIntosh will discuss the scientific validity of creationism and evolution in his talk, titled "Design, Thermodynamics and Information - from mindless matter or by God's Word?" A question- and answer-session will follow the lecture.

McIntosh is a researching professor in the thermodynamics and combustion theory in the fuel and energy department at University of Leeds.

Professor Mark Dunster from San Diego State University is visiting UMR's department of mathematics and statistics this week. Clear writing, successful proposals workshop set for Oct. 15

Kate Drowne, director of the UMR Writing Center, will present "Clear Writing, Successful Proposals" from 3-4:40 p.m. Oct. 15 in the Meramec/Gasconade Room of the Havener Center.

The workshop is the first in a series sponsored by the graduate studies office. The workshops are open to all UMR graduate students, faculty and staff. GM engineer to give presentation on campus

Susan Morales of General Motors will be on campus Sept. 17 to give a technical presentation, "GM Redefines the Crossover Segment-- Outlook, Acadia and Enclave." Morales is a vehicle chief engineer, midsize crossover SUV, at GM. Math seminars continue throughout the semester

Undergraduates and graduate students interested in mathematics and statistics will have a forum to share research ideas this fall from noon to 1 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays in Room G5 of the Rolla building. Topics to be discussed in these student research seminars include differential geometry, trends in university-level math education, independence proofs and finite model theory. The first speaker (Aug. 27 and Aug. 29) is Malgorzata Marciniak, a graduate student in mathematics. Marciniak will discuss differential geometry. The seminars are open to the general public.
