The student affairs Critical Incident Task Force (CITF) has officially become the University Committee for Assistance, Response and Evaluation (UCARE). Student affairs formed CITF after incidents on the S&T campus and at Virginia Tech highlighted the need for greater communication and preparedness regarding troubled students. Most of CITF's work has pertained to students facing difficulty or distress, while only a few situations involved a serious threat to campus. CITF members believe that UCARE best reflects its primary focus — to cast a broad net and attempt to intervene with students before a crisis develops.
Members of the campus community are encouraged to contact a UCARE member when they are concerned about a student. An increasing number of students with various mental health conditions and learning challenges are attending college, so more difficulties in functioning will be observed.
