Back by popular demand, the Engineers Without Borders fundraiser will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 29, and Saturday, Jan. 30, in Leach Theatre. This is a phenomenal opportunity to show off your singing, dancing, acting, juggling and trapeze skills, while supporting a great cause. The show is in particular need of some faculty with rhythm for one of the acts. New student programs would like to thank everyone for their involvement and dedication to S&T's freshmen during Opening Week last week. It was a positive learning experience for the new students, thanks to the cooperative efforts of many faculty, staff and students who participated. These early relationships freshmen develop with other students, staff and faculty are instrumental in helping them make a successful transition to college life. Opening Week also establishes realistic academic expectations for new students and provides programs that promote academic success. The department looks forward to working with everyone again in 2010.

The Rock Mechanics and Explosives Research Center will have an open house from 2-4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1, at its facility at 1006 Kingshighway. All students, faculty and staff are invited to stop by to welcome Dr. Stewart Gillies as the newly-appointed interim director of the center, and to thank Dr. David A. Summers for his years of service as director. Chancellor Carney will speak at 3 p.m. Tours of the facility and refreshments will be provided.

This year's Pink Ladies 5K Fun Run/Walk will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at Ber Juan Park Pavilion. Download registration forms from the student wellness website at counsel.mst.edu/wellness/index.html. Register by 4 p.m. today, Thursday, Aug. 27, for $15 and be guaranteed a T-shirt. Late registration is $18. The 5K is hosted by S&T student wellness, Joe's P.E.E.R.S. (peer education organization) and Zeta Tau Alpha. All proceeds go to breast cancer education and screenings.

Bargains abound at surplus sale

Campus procurement will have a surplus garage sale from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. tomorrow, Friday, Aug. 28 at Warehouse B, 300 Fairgrounds Road. Items include chairs, TVs, VCRs, shelves, desks, file cabinets, athletic clothing, cell phones, power cords, computers, monitors, keyboards, bulletin boards, bicycles and more. All items need to be removed the day of sale. The sale is open to the public. Cash only, or by pre-approved check if business or public organizations.

Place your bid on a Project X remote-control vehicle in the silent auction through 4 p.m. tomorrow, Friday, Aug. 28, on the second floor of the Havener Center. All proceeds go to the Phelps County Community Partnership. For more information, contact Ned Matuszak at emmq6c@mst.edu.

The Board of Curators has approved a change to the listing of directory information under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). The student information items "date and place of birth" and "weight and height of members of athletic teams" have been removed as directory information. See the wording change below:

UM CRR 180.020, paragraph B.3 defines student directory information/public information as "...a student's name, address, e-mail address, telephone listing, date and place of birth, major field of study, participation in officially recognized activities and sports, weight and height of members of athletic teams, dates of attendance, degrees and awards received, the most recent previous educational agenda or institution attended by the student, student level, and full- or part-time status."

The registrar's office is changing the listing of directory information online, on the FERPA screens in Joe'SS, and in printed material. If you have any questions please contact the registrar's office at registrar@mst.edu.

Bring your lunch and join Cathy Allison from the IT project management team from noon-1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28, in Room 201A of the Curtis Laws Wilson Library for a demo of the new Cisco Telepresence room. This high-definition video conferencing center is available to university faculty, students and staff for meetings with other UM System campuses.

The updated undergraduate and graduate catalogs are now available online at registrar.mst.edu/cataloginfo/cataloginfo.html . During September and October, Missouri S&T will conduct an internal review of its environmental management system (EMS). The internal audits will help the campus prepare for the next ISO-14001 recertification audit, scheduled for Nov. 18-20. The Fall 2009 Internal Review schedule is located at ems.mst.edu/checking/evaluation/2009-2010audit_schedule.html.

S&T's internal auditing team will contact departments in the next few weeks to schedule their internal audits. Each department is asked to designate a point of contact for the audit, either the department chair or a designee familiar with the department. Opening Week begins this Saturday

Opening Week begins on Saturday, Aug. 15, with more than 1,070 new freshmen participating in the "New Student Move-in." Throughout the week, students will complete an academic workshop, learn about campus and college life, and participate in Project X, a team design project. Faculty, staff and students are invited to attend all Opening Week activities to help welcome new students.

Dan Reardon, assistant director of the Writing Center, is available to visit classrooms this fall to discuss the center's tutoring services. Visits typically last less than 10 minutes and may be scheduled anytime during class sessions. To schedule a visit, please contact Reardon at 341-6813, or email him at reardond@mst.edu.

Cyclists in the Tour of Missouri will enter Rolla from the east on Highway BB and will cross the finish line in front of Castleman Hall around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9. Join an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 spectators in Rolla for this exciting event.

Recognized as one of the top five races outside of Europe, the Tour of Missouri will include riders representing nine teams that won 14 stages of the Tour de France, including Mark Cavendish of Team Columbia.

Travel and parking around campus will be affected. Lot 11 by Castleman Hall will close on Tuesday, Sept. 8, for event set-up. University parking lots 22 and 13 will be closed on Wednesday, Sept. 9. Those who typically park in these lots will be directed to alternate parking.

For updates on the H1N1 virus infection, please check the Student Health Center's website at studenthealth.mst.edu.

Please follow the Center of Disease Control and Prevention's recommendations to keep from getting or spreading viruses. First and most important: wash your hands. Try to stay in good general health. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids and eat nutritious food. Always cover your mouth when sneezing. Try not touch surfaces that may be contaminated. And avoid close contact with people who are sick.

Tentative plans for the program include a pinning ceremony and an address by Harvest Collier, vice provost of undergraduate studies.

An opportunities and resources fair will be held in the Miner Lounge of the Havener Center after the welcome program. Students will have the opportunity to help begin a new S&T tradition, reconnect with friends, enjoy snacks and register to win door prizes, including an iPod Nano.

This year's final Preview, Registration and Orientation (PRO) session will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, in the Havener Center. Incoming students will learn about student life, meet with their S&T advisors, take the math placement exam and register for fall 2009 semester classes. After attending PRO, new students will participate in Opening Week activities and will be ready to start classes on Monday, Aug. 24.

New Student Transfer Orientation will begin at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, in Room 199 Toomey Hall. This year's transfer students will create a design project and will meet faculty and staff in several different departments on campus. Please welcome our new students when they visit your office.

Brad Huff of Team Jelly Belly, a competitor in the Tour of Missouri, will meet with media at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, in the Havener Center. He will be accompanied by Chris Aronhalt, managing partner of event organizer Medalist Sports of Atlanta, Ga., and the local organizing committee.

Lose weight and get fit by joining the Move and Lose Challenge, beginning today, Tuesday, Aug. 4, and ending on Friday, Oct. 30. There will be two categories: weight loss and activity points. Teams should include no more than 10 members.

Get your weight, BMI (Body Mass Index), and blood pressure taken from 9-11 a.m. today, Tuesday, Aug. 4, in Room 206 Centennial Hall. The post-challenge check-in will be at the 2009 Faculty and Staff Wellness Fair on Nov. 19.

Singer joins provost's office

Provost Warren K. Wray is pleased to announce the appointment of Debbie Singer as executive assistant in the office of the provost. Singer has worked for several departments since arriving on campus in August 2003, most recently as an administrative assistant in the business and information technology department.
